An ombrellino is carried by a server behind a minister carrying the Blessed Sacrament, typically indoors within the church. It is used during the Holy Week liturgies at the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament and during Eucharistic processions. It is an item needed in every sacristy.
To carry the ombrellino steadily and safely in procession, the server should place one hand on the middle knob and another on the bottom handle. Standing directly behind the minister carrying the Blessed Sacrament, the server should hold the raised canopy slightly inclined forward over the minister. The server should keep the canopy closed when not in use, and open it just as the procession begins to leave from the altar.
